Ten Tips for the First 24 Hours with Your Rescue Dog.

Welcoming your new dog home is an exciting time! It can also be a stressful time for your new pup. GoodPup, our recommended training partner, has put together some tips, below, for helping ease the transition home.

Decide on ground rules. Plan where your pup will eat, play, and sleep while you’re home and where they’ll stay when you’re out.

Dog proof your home. Use baby gates or pens to keep them in a small, safe, designated area while they adjust.

Spend time with your pup. Commit to staying home with them as much as possible the first few days.

Set a potty training elimination area. Choose a single place where you can bring your dog consistently for elimination.

Set a potty schedule. Start with breaks every one hour for puppies or every two hours for adult dogs.

Create a cozy sleeping area. Ready it with bedding, toys and clothes that smell like you.

Create positive connections with your home. In areas where you dog is allowed, give them lots of treats to create a positive association.

Plan daily exercise and enrichment. Introduce your pup to interactive toys and take short walks through your neighborhood.

Find out what your pup knows. Grab the training treats and explore what skills your pupa ready knows.

Introduce new people, and pets, slowly. Wait to introduce others from outside your home until your new pup has settled in, usually at least 2-3 days, but we recommend waiting up to two weeks.
