Adoption Fees

An Explanation of Adoption Fees.

The Rescue Crew charges an adoption fee to adopt a pet. This fee typically only covers a portion of our investment in the care of our pets. The adoption fee includes the cost of:

Medical Examination.
Alteration (spay/neuter) surgeries.
Rabies vaccine (for all pets 3 months or older).
Distemper combination vaccine.
Flea treatment & preventative.
Parasite control: deworming is done as a preventative measure on all dogs and cats brought in to rescue. Cats also often present with ear mites that can also prgress to an ear infection.
Monthly preventatives: We administer monthly heartworm preventatives as well as seasonal flea & tick preventative.
Microchip & registration.
Dogs Only: Heartworm test (if over 6 months old) and preventative treatment
Cats Only: FIV/FeLK Test

The adoption fee also helps to cover other needed medical care of the animals while they wait for a new home, as well as food and other miscellaneous animal care supplies such as litter, kennels, training, etc. These fees also help us to provide care for the other animals in our care who may have medical bills that are much higher than any possible adoption fee would cover.

ADOPTION FEES ARE NON-REFUNDABLE AND NON-NEGOTIABLE. As outlined in our Adoption Agreement & Contract, we do not refund adoption fees if an animal is returned to us. With the exception of pets in our Foster-to-Adopt Program, we do not allow trial adoptions. Please think carefully before committing to adopt.

Please Note: There are additional processing fees charged to accept debit/credit card payments, which are outside of our control. These processing fees are passed along to the adopter at time of payment.

These adoption fees for both cats & dogs were established as of July 1, 2023 and are being slowly transitioned into effect as new pets enter the rescue after 7/1/23. Effective October 1, 2023, Minnesota sales tax that must be collected increased by 1% to 8.525%.

*A senior dog is defined as: small dogs 10+ years old and medium/large breed dogs 7+ years old. A senior cat is defined as 10+ years old. NOTE: there are times we may overlook this when entering a new pet into our system, or the pet may have passed the age limit during their time with us and the adoption fee wasn't automatically corrected. Please bring this to our attention so we can ensure you are charged the correct adoption fee. We are unable to refund any monies post-adoption.
**Single Resident Dog/Cat indicates a dog or cat that would do best as the only pet in the household.

How do we Determine Adoption Fees?

On an annual basis we conduct a thorough analysis of multiple local rescue organizations, both smaller and larger, along with humane societies/shelters that do public adoptions located throughout the state of Minnesota. The Board of Directors reviews this information and sets the adoption fees that will be assessed until such time another analysis is conducted.

What are the Taxes and Fees Charged?

Companion animals are considered personal (owned) property and therefore Minnesota general sales tax of 7.525% must be charged. The Rescue Crew submits total taxes collected on a monthly basis to the Minnesota Department of Revenue.

We are also charged a processing fee to accept payments via debit and credit card. This additional expense is passed along to the adopter at the time adoption is being finalized.
