What should I do if I can no longer keep my pet?
No one likes to think about having to give up a beloved pet. But there are times that someone can no longer care for their pet, and The Rescue Crew wants to make sure finding them a new home is an easy, compassionate process.
In the past, people were often told that bringing their pet to the shelter is the best way to help them be adopted in a new home. And we love forming new families at The Rescue Crew—but in many cases the better course is for a family to find their pet a new home themselves as often a rescue organization may not have the space or ability to help.
"Self-rehoming" is the term for finding a new home for your pet without them entering a shelter or animal rescue. Self-rehoming is usually more humane for pets than a shelter, and can help give you peace of mind as you get to select—and even stay in touch with—your pet’s new family.
If you need to find a new home for your pet, start with your network of friends, family and neighbors—in person and online—and post to self-rehoming websites like home-home.org and adoptapet.com.
The Rescue Crew can also help by posting a courtesy adoption listing on our website and social media platforms. This is called "supported self-rehoming," and it is a very important service we provide to our community and pets! At times, We may be able to provide food, supplies, and other support or direct you to other resources that can assist.
There is safety net support, like pet food banks and access to low cost veterinary care, for pet owners who would like to keep their pet, but aren't sure how. You can find out about many these programs here:
